Dr Bjørn Egil Vikse was born in 1977, is married and has two boys born in 2005 and 2008. He completed medical school at University of Bergen in 2002 and defended his PhD thesis “Risk factors in development and progression of kidney disease” in 2004. In 2005 he started clinical training in internal medicine and nephrology at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen and from 2008 he combined this training with a post-doctoral fellowship. He has been leader of the Norwegian Kidney Biopsy Registry and the Renal Research Group in Bergen. From 2012 Vikse started a combined position as nephrologist at Haugesund Hospital and professor at University of Bergen. In his daily work he works in ordinary clinical care, has the responsibility for clinical training of medical students from the University of Bergen at Haugesund Hospital and takes part in several different research projects. Vikse started with epidemiological research utilizing the national kidney and birth registries in Norway but since 2010 he has led a project on development and application of modern proteomic methods for investigation of mechanisms and prognostic markers for kidney disease progression. His most important scientific papers have shown that low birth weight and preeclampsia are important risk markers of future kidney disease and he has been responsible for several follow-up studies of these findings. As of March 2016, Vikse has been involved in 35 PubMed indexed papers and supervises 5 PhD candidates in projects related to nephrology or proteomics.
