Dirk Van Gysel qualified as a pediatrician at the University of Leuven in Belgium and further subspecialized in pediatric dermatology at the University of Leuven and the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He obtained his PhD at the University of Ghent in Belgium in 2009 with the “Aalst Allergy Study.” He is currently Head of the Department of Pediatrics in the O.L.Vrouw Hospital Aalst, Professor of Pediatric Dermatology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Consultant in Pediatric Dermatology at the Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel (UZ Brussel) in Belgium.

He is president of the Belgian Pediatric Dermatology Association (BPDA) and chair of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Task Force for Pediatric Dermatology. He was the European Society for Pediatric Dermatology (ESPD) treasurer between 2004 and 2012 and is still a board member. He was an advisory board member of the International Society of Pediatric Dermatology (ISPD) from 2018 to 2021 and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of this society.

He has published several book chapters and journal articles in peer-reviewed allergy, pediatrics and pediatric dermatology journals. He has been involved in organising several national and international congresses and training courses in dermatology and pediatric dermatology. He has also been a lecturer/chair in several National & International dermatology and pediatric dermatology meetings. He is a referee to several international journals in the field of pediatric dermatology.
