Douglas McCall has been a founder of the school health movement in Canada since 1987 and similarly at the international level since 2003. He was instrumental in establishing much of the infrastructure in Canada including a federal-provincial intergovernmental Joint Consortium for School Health, and a multi-year, $11 million dollar Health & Learning Knowledge Centre at the University of Victoria. He has worked with others from around the world to establish the International School Health Network (ISHN) which brings together over 2000 policy-makers, practitioners and researchers in a program of knowledge exchange activities that use webinars, web meetings, focused Twitter news/research feeds, blogs and a Wikipedia style web site. He serves as a member of the FRESH Coordinating Committee, which includes most UN agencies and several international organizations. A current initiative, undertaken with the international organizations representing school district/education ministry officials (ASCD) and teachers (EI) as well as with UNESCO, has engaged informal networks in several regions of the world as well as over 60 organizations at the global level in a discussion on how health, social and development programs can be better integrated within education systems. He has written over 100 monographs, guides and other publications including the international Synthesis Statement on Human Development and the Social Role of the School, work with a Canadian Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies a status report on HIV/AIDS and school health programs with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada and three book chapters describing the evolution of settings-based and school health promotion. Mr. McCall co-authored an award winning journal article on the application of ecological approaches to school health promotion. In 2013, he was recognized as one of the founders of the global school health movement by the Institute for Excellence in Pediatrics.
