Elianne Vrijlandt is the Head of Patient Care at Beatrix Children’s Hospital (BCH), University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands. She is a highly skilled pediatrician with a specialized background in Pediatric Pulmonology. After completing her medical degree in Pediatrics in 2000, she pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology followed by a PhD. She obtained a permanent position at Groningen in 2003, and completed her doctoral research on respiratory health in premature children in 2006.
As a clinician, Dr. Vrijlandt runs specialized clinics for children with a wide range of respiratory conditions, with a particular focus on infants and children suffering from severe asthma, congenital respiratory disorders, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Her expertise extends to both acute care and long-term management of these conditions. She has been an integral member of the BCH management team since 2013, contributing to the hospital's leadership in pediatric care.
Dr. Vrijlandt's research interests are centered around infant lung function, with particular expertise in techniques such as Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT), baby plethysmography, and multiple-breath washout (MBW) testing. She has dedicated substantial work to understanding the long-term health outcomes of preterm-born children, including those with and without BPD. Her research also explores the implications of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), particularly in the follow-up care of infants who have experienced severe RSV infections during their ICU stay. Additionally, her interests include exercise testing and the health of late preterm infants.
Through her clinical and research endeavors, Dr. Vrijlandt continues to make significant contributions to the fields of pediatric pulmonology and respiratory health in young children, advancing both patient care and scientific understanding in these critical areas.
