Dr. Argente is a distinguished expert in pediatric endocrinology, with a remarkable career spanning multiple continents and institutions. He earned his M.D. from the University of Zaragoza, Spain, where he received the prestigious “First Award Summa cum Laude.” He later obtained his PhD from the University of Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, in 1985, earning the “First Award Summa cum Laude” for his doctoral thesis.
Dr. Argente completed his pediatric training at the Hospital Ramón y Cajal, Madrid, and further specialized in pediatric endocrinology at the Hôpital Saint Vincent de Paul in Paris. His postdoctoral work included a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Virginia (1986-1987) and subsequent research at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA (1987-1989).
Currently, Dr. Argente holds multiple prominent roles: Full Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology, as well as Director of the Department of Pediatrics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He also serves as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and Endocrinology at the University Hospital Niño Jesús in Madrid, where he leads a research laboratory focused on growth, obesity, puberty, eating disorders, and diabetes. In addition, he directs the Childhood Obesity Program at CIBEROBN, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid, and is an Associate Researcher at the IMDEA Food Institute.
Dr. Argente has authored more than 500 original articles, reviews, textbook chapters, and books, contributing significantly to the fields of pediatric endocrinology and metabolism. His pioneering work has earned him numerous accolades, including the ESPE Henning Andersen Prize (1989, 2013, 2015), the ESPE Young Investigator Award (1993), the ESPE Andrea Prader Award (2019), and the Visionary Award from the Human Growth Foundation (2020), among others. He was also honored with the XVI Hippocrates International Award of Medicine in 2021.
A respected lecturer, Dr. Argente has delivered presentations in over 35 countries across Europe, America, Africa, and Asia, contributing to the advancement of pediatric endocrinology through his participation in leading scientific societies such as ESPE, SLEP, ASPED, SEEP, and the Endocrine Society. He served as the President of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) in 2002 and as President of the Spanish Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (2004-2008). In 2018, he was inducted as a member of the Spanish Royal National Academy of Medicine, a testament to his contributions to the field.
Dr. Argente continues to be at the forefront of pediatric endocrinology research and education, influencing both clinical practice and global scientific discourse.
