After finishing his medical studies and his residency in pediatrics in his hometown of Barcelona (Universitat de Barcelona), Joan-Carles Surís received a scholarship to pursue a fellowship in Adolescent Health and a Master in Public Health (Maternal and child health) at the University of Minnesota, USA. Upon his return to Barcelona, he created and directed an adolescent outpatient clinic at the Institut Universitari Dexeus. In 2003 he received his PhD Cum Laude from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. In September 2003 he moved to Lausanne, Switzerland where he is the head of the Research Group on Adolescent Health at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine and an associated physician at Department of Pediatrics, both at the Lausanne University Hospital. His main research interests are the psychosocial aspects of chronically ill adolescents, exploratory behaviours in adolescence and the relationship between adolescents and their parents.
