Born in Nicosia, Cyprus and pursued his medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Freiburg, Germany where he attained a Doctorate of Medicine in December 1986. During his studies, he underwent an internship at Grantham General Hospital, United Kingdom. He joined Maria-Hilf General Hospital, Bad Neuenahr, Germany (Dr N. Nikolai) 1985 – 1992, as a Medical Assistant, where he specialized in General Surgery. Thereafter, he moved to Hamburg and continued as a Medical Assistant in the Department of Pediatric Surgery; Children ́s Hospital Wilhelmstift, Hamburg, Germany (PD Dr Hj. Zimmermann) 1992 – 1994. He subsequently joined the Pediatric Hand Surgery Department at the same institution (Prof. Buck-Gramcko, Dr. Habenicht), 1994 – 2000. Thereafter, he joined the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Children ́s Hospital of Cologne, Amsterdamer Str., Cologne, Germany, where he specialized in Pediatric Surgery, and subsequently held the position of Consultant (Prof. Dr. A. Holschneider up to 2005 and thereafter, Prof. Dr. Dr. T. M. Boemers). From 2006 – to 2021 he served as the Senior Consultant and Deputy Chief Department of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology, Children ́s Hospital of Cologne, Amsterdamer Str. (Prof. Dr. Dr. T. M. Boemers). Main Focus being Pediatric Hand Surgery, Burn Surgery, Skin differences, vascular tumors and vascular malformations in children. In 2021 he was appointed as Head of Burn-Centre for Children and Pediatric Hand surgery Section, Children ́s Hospital, Amsterdamer Str., Cologne, Germany until his retirement in 2023. Since then, Dr. Marathovouniotis continues his medical career and Consults in the field of Pediatric Hand Surgery and Burns at Children. He holds Ordinary Memberships at the German Society for Burn-Treatment, European Club for Paediatric Burns, and German Society of Pediatric Surgeons; he is Extra-Ordinary Member of the German Society for Surgery of the Hand and Member of the Network of Interdisciplinary Pediatric Dermatology. He has authored and co-authored numerous Publications on Pediatric Surgery, Thermal injuries in children, Pediatric Traumatology, Vascular Tumors and Vascular Malformations.
