Professor of pediatric dermatology, Head of Department, Erasmus University MC (NL)
I was trained as a doctor (cum laude) in Leiden. In 1995 I obtained my PhD as an immunologist at Sanquin / Central Laboratory of the Blood Transfusion Service (CLB), Laboratory of Clinical Immunology in Amsterdam. I was a research fellow at the Institute Curie / Inserm in Paris and trained as a dermatologist at the UMC Utrecht until 2000. After that, I became a leader of pediatric dermatology/allergy until July 2013. Since then I have been working as an endowed professor of pediatric dermatology at Erasmus MC- Sophia Children's Hospital / Children's Port. Together with my team, I am committed to healthcare innovations and research in children with skin disorders. We mainly focus on children with eczema and rare birth defects. I am the founder of the Pediatric Dermatology / Genodermatoses domain group of the Dutch Society of Dermatology and Venereology (2009), of which I was also chairman. I am involved in the development of guidelines, such as the Skin guideline for youth health care, congenital nevi, revision atopic eczema, and in the training and refresher courses of professionals. My vision: to improve the care for children with skin disorders by offering specialized knowledge in an accessible way (see also: www. Huidhuis.nl), as well as treatments, self-management tools and scientific research. The guiding principle here is the perspective of the child and the parents, and the cooperation of the care professionals involved with the children and their parents.
