Associate Professor in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, Head of Dept. of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Allergology, Sophia Children's Hospital, NETHERLANDS

Marielle Pijnenburg is associate Professor in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and head of the department of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Allergology in Sophia Children’s Hospital. She was trained as a paediatrician at the University Hospital Groningen and continued her career with a fellowship in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at Erasmus MC. She obtained a permanent position in Rotterdam in 2002 and finished her PhD thesis on exhaled nitric oxide in children with asthma in 2006.

As a clinician she runs clinics for children with all paediatric respiratory diseases, but in particular for severe asthma, cystic fibrosis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. For CF and BPD Erasmus MC is a national expertise centre.  She is a member of the management team of the Paediatric Chest Centre Sophia, a close collaboration between the departments of Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Surgery and ENT-Surgery.  Het research focuses on monitoring of respiratory diseases, in particular asthma and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Personalized medicine has her special interest.  Marielle Pijnenburg is secretary of the Paediatric Assembly of the European Respiratory Society. She has authored over 75 papers.
